RUNDUM GSUND (ALL-ROUND HEALTH) IN THE WEINVIERTEL REGION
A region learns to be healthy. The pilot project “Rundum gsund in the Weinviertel region”, which contributed to raising awareness with measures and to enhancing the quality of life and promoting a healthy lifestyle in the Weinviertel region through various health promotion projects, started in 2010. In the context of the overall project, implementation projects were developed in the six small regions and supra-regionally. The content-related project focus areas were based on rounds of analysis per small region.
Weinviertel food pyramid
The Weinviertel food pyramid is an idea, which was implemented at the initiative of the LEADER Region Weinviertel Ost in the context of the Weinviertel health dialogue of “Rundum gsund (all-round health) in the Weinviertel region”. It is based on the Austrian food pyramid, which was continued with regional and seasonal products. Besides freshness, regionality and seasonality, the focus is on health-promoting aspects of food products.
All of the components of a healthy diet and the respective quantities can be found in this pyramid. The Weinviertel is rich in food products and producers and thus the entire food pyramid could be filled with regional products, such as Weinviertel bread, vegetable and fruit varieties such as pumpkin and onion, all kinds of fruit such as grapes, raspberries, apricots, oils such as pumpkin seed oil, and of course game.
A balanced diet is an essential factor for a healthy life, and the right mix can also be found in the variety of Weinviertel products. In order to motivate the people of the Weinviertel towards a healthy diet, the Weinviertel food pyramid was presented at various food festivals, and matching recipe cards were even distributed.
From the school pattern sheet to the catering table display – the Weinviertel food pyramid stands for food awareness, product quality and regionality.
THE WAY OF ST. JAMES WEINVIERTEL
The Way of St. James Weinviertel project was initiated by Episcopal Vicar Matthias Roch and Landtag president a.D. Edmund Freibauer, who gained Tourismus as a partner. With this move, it succeeded in attaching to an international issue and benefiting from the strong existing The Way of St. James brand. It was implemented as a joint project within the remit of three LEADER regions (Weinviertel Ost, Weinviertel-Donauraum, Kamptal-Wagram) and supra-regionally coordinated. The implementation measures included, among other things, route planning, mapping material, development of stages, marketing measures and signposting. The pilgrimage route developed into an important tourism initiative in the Weinviertel shortly after opening.
The pilgrimage addresses people's longing for a successful life, meaningfulness and direction. The versatile beauty of the region can be experienced with all human senses on the Way of St. James Weinviertel. The route, 162 km long, leads from Mikulov/Czech Republic through Drasenhofen, Mistelbach, Großrußbach and Stockerau to Krems/Mautern an der Donau. The route ends in Mautern at the Austria Way of St. James along the Danube.
