The landmarks of weinviertel - the cellar lanes …
We’re COMMITED TO Preserving THEM!
CELLAR LANE CULTURAL HERITAGE IN Weinviertel
Cellar lane /Kèller-gasse/, noun, feminine [die]: A street or path, usually on the outskirts of a town or on a hillside, lined with historic wine cellars. Most of the 1,300 cellar lanes in Lower Austria are located in the Weinviertel region. The cellar lanes were created in the 18th century as work and storage places for winegrowers. Wine was processed, stored, and later also served in the cellars. Today, hardly any wine is produced in the cellar lanes anymore; they now serve as places for social gatherings for festivals, guided tours, and wine taverns.
The cellar lanes of the Weinviertel must be preserved. For this reason, the project “Sensitization to the Kellergasse as a Cultural Asset” was launched together with the LEADER Region Weinviertel Danube Region in coordination with Weinviertel Tourism, the Kellergasse Management of Lower Austria's Village and Town Renewal, the Association of Kellergasse Guides in the Weinviertel, and the Department of Building Culture and Construction Affairs in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Lower Austrian Provincial Government. We are focusing on raising awareness among the communities, cellar owners, and the population. The aim is to draw attention to the Kellergasse as a cultural asset, thereby protecting it from decay and revitalizing it with new types of events.
