Artistic interim use Friebritz
Vacancy is a growing challenge in many municipalities of the Weinviertel – including Fallbach, where the former community hall in Friebritz has stood unused for years. With the project “COMPOST or The Soil of My Mother”, this vacant space will be transformed into a temporary cultural and community venue for two months as part of the Viertelfestival 2026.
An international group of artists, led by the association Töchter der Kunst (Daughters of Art), will engage with the theme of compost – understood as a metaphor for cycles, transformation, and new growth. Through on-site residencies, artistic works will emerge in the fields of visual arts, performance, music, and literature. At the same time, participatory formats will be developed to actively involve the local population: from coffeehouse-style gatherings and idea walls to tandems between artists and villagers.
In this way, personal stories will be collected, artistically reinterpreted, and publicly presented – in open studios, an exhibition, and a festive “Compost Salon”. The aim is to make vacancy visible, to re-experience it as a social space, and to generate impulses for future uses.
The project is made possible through the cooperation of the LEADER Region Weinviertel Ost, Kulturvernetzung NÖ, and the municipality of Fallbach, and is conceived as a model of how creative interim use can revitalize vacant spaces in rural communities.
