Chill-out zone Schönkirchen-Reyersdorf

As part of the social space analysis for the Southern Weinviertel region, it became clear that young people wanted a dedicated meeting place for their age group. Until then, they had been using the bus stop along the B220 as an informal gathering spot. However, due to heavy traffic and its exposed location, this area was not a safe or suitable place for young people to spend time.

To address the actual needs of the youth, they were actively involved in a participatory process. During this process, they expressed specific wishes for the design of a new meeting place, including seating areas to linger, bicycle parking facilities, and an appealing and youth-friendly atmosphere. These ideas formed the basis for the planning of the “Chill Out Zone – Rest Area” and enabled a needs-based implementation.

A key objective of the project was to establish the initiative in the Weinviertel region in a long-term and sustainable manner. The municipality of Schönkirchen-Reyersdorf is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the meeting place, thereby ensuring its long-term use. Additionally, shade-providing trees and landscaping measures were planned to further enhance the quality of the space and make it climate-resilient and future-oriented.

Another key factor in the project’s sustainability was the active involvement of the young people themselves. Because their ideas and needs were incorporated into the planning from the very beginning, they developed a strong sense of ownership of the space. This encouraged them to treat the area with respect and helped ensure that the chill-out zone would be used and appreciated over the long term, becoming an integral part of community life.
