Cultural Quarter Monastery
The former Barnabite College and its surrounding historical buildings – including the benefice houses with the city's oldest house, the parish center, the Roller-Keller, and the Schwedenkeller – together with the natural gems of Kirchenberg and the monastery garden, form an ensemble that is unique in its diversity and beauty. This ensemble shall no longer remain hidden, but open itself to the people of the region, to artists of all genres, to spirituality, to education, to new ways of thinking, and to shared experiences.
'We want to breathe new life into these time-honored buildings,' says City Pastor Johannes Cornaro. 'And we want to do so primarily through culture and education. After all, what we call a monastery today was always a college – which originally means a learning community. The Barnabites built it over 300 years ago for education and further training. Now, we want to open it to everyone!'
At the center of the Culture Quarter stands the monastery itself. With its impressive spaces – the monastery cellar, chapel, library, cloister, refectory, and courtyard – it offers the ideal conditions for hosting a diverse cultural program: theater, concerts, cabaret, readings, exhibitions, discussion formats, films, festivals, workshops, and much more. Step by step, the Monastery Culture Quarter is becoming an open, inspiring place where tradition, contemporary culture, and spirituality meet – evolving into a new cultural heart of Mistelbach.
